Frequently Asked Questions

Don’t just focus on rankings. Consider other factors as well. Choose a school that truly meets your needs and expectations rather than looking for prestige. Review the majors and academic courses the school offers to make sure they align with your interests and career goals. Learn about the faculty’s strengths and research opportunities at school. Consider other factors such as climate, culture, social environment, geographical location, as well as humanistic aspects.

Students who haven’t determined their major can choose “Undecided” when applying, which is actually a very common situation. Students can choose some general courses to learn about different subjects and explore different areas of interest during their freshman and sophomore years. Some schools also offer interdisciplinary majors, allowing students to combine courses from different disciplines to create their own academic paths.

Standardized tests such as grades can only reflect one aspect of your academic ability as a student, while extracurricular activities and competition backgrounds allow admissions officers to understand your characteristics in a more direct way. However, soft backgrounds such as internships, competitions, and activities are only bonus points that build on your standardized test score. If these activities affect your GPA negatively, then it may not be worth it.

The number of schools you apply to can vary depending on your circumstances, but most students usually apply to around 7-8 schools. This includes 2-3 reach schools, 3 target schools, and 1-2 safety schools.
