I believe that most of the students studying in the United States attend schools located in rural areas. \nBut last week, Johns Hopkins University, ranked 9th in the United States, officially announced that they will use the $650 million Bloomberg Center located next to the White House and Capitol as the teaching building for the new college!<\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/p>\n

Moreover, against the backdrop of the pandemic and years of political paralysis, the demand for government innovation as a research field among students has been growing, which has given birth to JHU’s current School of Policy and Government.
\nThis is also the first new college opened by JHU in the past 16 years.
\nA new campus located in the capital of the United States
\nThe Bloomberg Center, located at 555 Pennsylvania Avenue, held a grand opening ceremony on October 19th and will be the new home for Johns Hopkins University students in Washington D.C.
\nThis state-of-the-art academic center is only a few minutes away from the United States Capitol, the White House, the Treasury Department, the Department of Energy, and National Square.<\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/p>\n

The predecessor of Bloomberg Center was the Washington News Museum. Since 2019, Johns Hopkins University has invested a total of $650 million (equivalent to 4 billion RMB) in purchasing, refurbishing, and designing. The exterior of this 7-story building features a wide glass curtain wall, covering an area of 40000 square meters, equivalent to the size of approximately 6 football fields.<\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/p>\n

Among them, the most historically significant should be the Berlin Wall.
\nIn 1989, the Berlin Wall collapsed during the democratic uprising, marking the disintegration of the communist regime in East Germany, the reunification of Germany, and the end of decades long Cold War. In the following years, the remaining part of the city wall was given new meaning. They were once a powerful symbol of the Iron Curtain and are now exhibited around the world, reminding people of the power of protest and the spirit of democracy.<\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/p>\n

This wall fragment is 11 feet 10 inches tall and weighs nearly 7000 pounds. Now, a part of the wall stands at the Bloomberg Center of Johns Hopkins University. As a gift from the Berlin Senate, the wall fragments were first transported to the School of Advanced International Studies at Johns Hopkins University in Washington in 1997.
\nThe first new college in 16 years
\nThe School of Government and Policy is expected to provide services to 200-250 graduate students and will open applications in batches starting in 2025. The first batch of students will enroll in the autumn of 2026. The School of Government and Policy will offer dual degrees in Government Master’s and MBA programs.
\nThe government master’s degree requires students to complete 36 credits, consisting of 3 mandatory core courses, 1-2 customizable core courses, and 7-8 elective courses, providing three research areas: democratic research and governance, political communication, and security research.<\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/p>\n

\nJohn Hopkins University President Ron Daniels said, “The School of Government and Policy will bring innovative expertise and insights from large-scale datasets to formulate policies and address the challenges facing our country and the world.”<\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/p>\n

The School of Government and Policy will collaborate with the School of Advanced International Studies (SAIS), also located at the Bloomberg Center, to enable both schools to more fully apply their teachers’ professional knowledge to address cross-border challenges such as technology policy, climate change, sustainable development, economics, and finance.
\nIn addition, the School of Government and Policy will also draw on the successful experience of existing government strengthening institutions at Johns Hopkins University and work closely with the Bloomberg Center for Public Innovation and the Bloomberg Center for Government Excellence.
\nThis collaboration will also help build a connection between Baltimore and Washington, enabling faculty and students located in Baltimore to easily and effectively bring their ideas and expertise to Washington, greatly enhancing the contribution of Johns Hopkins University in policy debate and analysis.
